About
"The paintings of Louise Cattrell haunt the imagination with their mysterious beauty. They appear as timeless as the landscapes they depict, and yet somehow distinctly contemporary. Each work is as exquisitely painted as anything by JMW Turner, and seems to show a world that still looks just as must have done in his day – the unchanging rocks, seas, hills and skies of the long ago past – but there is always another dimension to Cattrell’s art. She is a romantic for the twenty-first century."
Laura Cumming, 2015
The concept of an ideal landscape, what and where that means has been central to my work. Travel and residencies have been crucial and pivotal in generating my drawing and paintings in the solitary landscapes of Scotland, Switzerland and the Australian desert where the absence of human made references and the elemental form of the land and sea still exists. These have been important sources in making my work.
Vantage points within these landscapes are universal in their importance of our understanding of the panorama of the image. They have become a structural focus around which my painting begins and develops. In relocating my personal perspective and illuminating the depth of field within each landscape my aim is to give a new form in exploring the experience of topography from the known to the mysterious.
I gather and hold information in my memory through walking and being in the landscape. This allows a time separation between the seeing and the making.
